Hurricane Ike: 2009
Like the damage done here, the hurricane had gigantic damage to mainly in east Texas (Galveston, Houston, etc.)
Though this isn't part of the effects to the ecosystem, you can see here that hurricanes cause a great deal of damage to land and even houses! It can cause over flooding and strong winds can break structures.

Hurricane Sandy: 2012
Effects
Affecting the animal populations
The hurricanes kill the animals that live underwater and also land animals. Since there is a food chain, the animals that are dying will affect all the other animals that eat it. The chain reaction goes on and on and soon affects the whole ecosystem. It also causes the habitats of the organisms to be over-flood because of the heavy rain. This can lead to floods which you can learn about here.

Affecting aquatic communities
It has a great impact on the aquatic communities because sediment erosion and deposition seem to affect the coral reefs and oysters. When salt water is brought over by the effects of the hurricane then it will disrupt the animals that live in freshwater and cause them to die. The water that floods these waters also mainly contain harmful substances such as ammonia, pesticide, and sewage. These can degrade water quality and kill many organisms that live there.
Terrestrial destruction
To the right is just an example of a destruction of aquatic, not a terrestrial destruction. Mainly terrestrial destruction is the erosion that comes along with the hurricane. It erodes the land and brings the sediments to other areas. Usually in hurricanes it will destroy many habitats for creatures such as bird nests. It also can destroy sea grass beds and many other things that help the terrestrial organisms to survive.
